Drop by for an exclusive celebration of the work of Jonathan Burden, a pioneer in the preservation of antiques and decorative arts who trained at West Dean in Sussex and worked for Sotheby’s. In a modern twist on the traditional country house sale model, Christie’s is offering the contents of Jonathan Burden’s LIC studio in an online-only auction from September 24 to October 8, 2025, with all property remaining on-site. Nearly everything will be offered without reserve, making it an ideal opportunity for decorators, designers, new or young collectors and aspiring connoisseurs. Our program concludes at 8:00 p.m.
After a welcome from Jonathan Burden, alumna Allison Cox ’23, Specialist in English Furniture and Decorative Arts at Christie’s, will lead us through Burden’s galleries, followed by a tour of his workshop and a discussion with Burden of his restoration philosophy. Highlights on view include Burden’s collection of Chinese Export furniture and Anglo-Indian furniture.
About Burden
Jonathan Burden is a distinguished antique furniture restorer and dealer, whose passion for craftsmanship took root in his Yorkshire youth and formal training at the prestigious West Dean College in Sussex. After honing his skills in London and Europe, he moved to New York in the mid-1980s, briefly joining Sotheby’s (back when they had an antique restoration department) before launching his own enterprise in Williamsburg and later Tribeca. In 2016, he established Burden, Dealers and Conservators of Fine Furniture in Long Island City—a gallery and workshop renowned for its high-end restoration, eclectic inventory, and contemporary artisan collaborations. He also gained acclaim for reproducing architectural stands inspired by Sir John Soane’s designs, marrying historical fidelity with modern adaptability. A celebrated conservationist, Burden has restored everything from historic museum period rooms to delicate Chinese chairs (some fetching seven-figure auction results), and places preservation of original surfaces above full refinishing—a philosophy reflecting his deep respect for a piece’s heritage. Burden’s studio is housed in a converted industrial warehouse, transformed into a loft-like space with three front gallery rooms and a working antique restoration studio in the back.
