Hudson Valley Day Trip

Saturday, October 26, 2019
$150 per person

Join AFA for a special fall day trip of artistic and historic sites in the Hudson Valley!

The exciting and full day will start with a visit to Manitoga. Located in Garrison, New York, Manitoga is the former home and 75-acre woodland garden of American industrial designer Russel Wright (1904-1976). The site is a National Historic Landmark and one of the few 20th century modern homes with an intact original landscape open to the public.

The group will then travel to nearby Boscobel House and Gardens where we will enjoy an exhilarating visit to thanks to Jennifer Carlquist ’03, LHC ’16, Executive Director of the house and gardens and AFA Board member. Dating to 1808, this Neoclassical mansion contains one of the finest collections of Federal decorative arts and offers arguably the best overlook view of the Hudson River. The Boscobel visit will also include a special presentation of New York decorative arts and Duncan Phyfe furniture.

In the afternoon, the group will visit the newly opened Magazzino Italian Art Foundation, which is devoted to Italian Postwar and Contemporary Art. Designed by Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo, the 20,000 square-foot structure was completed in June 2017. Magazzino serves as a resource for scholars and students and offers an extensive library and archive of Italian Art.

On the way back to the city, the day will conclude with drinks at The Armour-Stiner Octagon House in Irvington. This unique and fully domed octagonal residence was remodeled from a simpler structure in 1872 and replicates Donato Bramante’s 1502 Tempietto in Rome. After a series of owners, the house came under the stewardship of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It was purchased by its current owner, architect Joseph Pell Lombardi, from the Trust in 1978.

The cost is $150 per person which includes round trip travel by coach from NYC, entrance fees, tours and a picnic lunch. Space is limited.
