Running, Researching and Rediscovering the Home of Devon– recent insights into the past 2000 years at Powderham Castle
Featuring Charles Courtenay, the 19th Earl of Devon
The AFA is thrilled to welcome Lord Charles Courtenay, Earl of Devon, as this year’s annual lecture speaker. His talk will include recent discoveries through the education and research programs of his ancestral home, Powderham Castle. This long-awaited presentation, originally scheduled for 2020, promises to be both lively and enlightening. The evening includes a lecture, followed by a cocktail reception.
About the Earl of Devon
Lord Devon lives with his wife, AJ, and their two children between Los Angeles and Powderham Castle, near Exeter, Devon. Overlooking the Exe Estuary, Powderham has been the family home since it was built in 1392. The Castle, its ancient parkland, and gardens have long operated as a family-owned, socially-enterprising, start-up, SME, sustainably managed for social benefit and a warm welcome year-round.
An English Barrister and a California attorney, Charlie lived between 2003 and 2014 in AJ’s hometown of Los Angeles, where she plied her trade as an actor, and he became an Intellectual Property litigator. They returned to England in 2014. Since then Charlie has succeeded his father to the ancient Earldom of Devon, moved his practice to Michelmores LLP, and took a seat as a crossbench hereditary peer in the House of Lords.
A passionate advocate for sustainable land management and heritage, and a champion of his home county of Devon, Charlie enjoys time with his family in California and Devon, exploring, surfing, and paddle boarding. The family have five key values for life and work: authenticity, sustainability, inclusivity, community, and adventure.
